Weavers of Sardinia
PROJECT: By Hand: Sardinia’s Makers
CLIENT: Beyond Noise
YEAR: 2025
On commission for editorial publication Beyond Noise, we spent a summer researching and spending time with textile makers across Sardinia to explore the island’s living weaving traditions, the history, materials and techniques that define them, and the people working to carry them forward. Our research looked beyond craftsmanship as a technique, product, heritage or aesthetic, and towards the wider lessons it has to teach global audiences about living well.
We discovered that weaving in Sardinia has historically created a structure for intergenerational exchange: knowledge passed hand to hand, through observation, repetition and time spent making alongside someone else. Many of these relationships have been disrupted as traditional practices decline, but there is now a renewed interest in reviving them. Capturing this through interviews and a short documentary film, we told the stories not only of the women preserving weaving traditions themselves, but the relationships and passing of knowledge that craft makes possible between generations.
